Academic and Other Achievements
The Aer Lingus Young Scientist Exhibition
The Aer Lingus Young Scientist Exhibition is a national science competition/exhibition
held in Dublin in early January of each year open to secondary school students.
During my 6 years in Secondary school I have entered the competition 4
times, I found it offered an excellent opportunity to investigate areas
of science that I was interested in, and I have had some success as detailed
below in reverse chronological order.
January 1995
Mapping Internal Variations in Translucency within a
Translucent Object using Beams of Light
This project involved the development of new mathematical techniques to
extract information from 'blurred' data. This project was entered
in the Individual Chemical, Physical and Mathematical sciences Senior section.
It was awarded first prize in that section, a prize from the Irish Physics
Society, and I was also invited to an exhibition by Forbairt
for projects with industrial potential. An informal summary of the project
is available at http://www.sanity.uklinux.net/tblob.html
January 1994
The C Neural Network Tool kit
This project involved designing and implementing a 'tool kit' in the C
programming language (which I learned for the purposes of this project)
to allow people to make use of 'Neural Networks' in their C programs.
This project was entered in the Individual Chemical, Physical, and Mathematical
sciences Senior section. It was awarded First prize in that section.
January 1993
An Algorithmic Beginners Programming Language
For this project I designed and implemented a new programming language
intended to be quick to learn and understand for people who may not be
familiar with programming. This project was entered into the Individual
Chemical, Physical, and Mathematical sciences Intermediate section, and
was highly commended, and was awarded a prize from the Irish Computer Society.
I was also invited to an exhibition by Forbairt
for projects with industrial potential.
January 1991
Milk Containers Friend or Foe
The aim of this project was to determine which of the popular milk containers
was the most hygienic. It was entered into the Group Biological and
Ecological Sciences, Junior section, and won third place in that section.
Other Achievements
June 1998
My team won the Department of Computer Science System Design project.
This was a 4 week competition in which 9 teams of students researched,
designed, built and marketed a video door entry system.
October 1997
I was appointed president of the Edinburgh
University Artificial Intelligence Society.
July 1997
Developer.com, the largest Java
applet repository on the Internet, featured a handwriting recognition applet
which I wrote in an article on their site as part of a comparison of various
website navigation methods. They described my applet as being "In a class
of it's own". This exposure resulted in over 8000 people visiting my web-page
in the following few weeks.
October 1996
I was elected as the class representative of the Maths 2Y Course.
October 1995
I was presented with a special award from my school for Outstanding Contribution
to Science.
I was elected as the class representative of the CS1h Course
October 1994
I was elected to the position of prefect by the teaching staff of my school.
April 1993
My team won the Leinster Church of Ireland debating Competition
General Interests Among my
current interests are debating and politics, I maintain a keen
interest in new developments in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence,
and science in general. I also maintain a keen interest in new
developments in the Internet, and have my own personal web-page located at
http://www.sanity.uklinux.co.uk/.
My personal web-page also details several personal projects I have
undertaken in the past.
